Velocity Aligned Rudders (VAR) and Velocity Aligned Brackets (VAB)
Our velocity aligned rudders and brackets work in harmony with the propeller to improve the water flow, reduce resistance and therefore improve manoeuvrability, rudder response, fuel economy and speed. At the same time they reduce noise, vibration and cavitation, making the package the perfect choice for all boat builders, owners and operators.
Typically, we see a 10% improvement in fuel economy and for a 30kn vessel a 1kn to 2kn increase in speed.
We have designed and supplied numerous sets of VAR & VAB and the system works equally well on a 8kn ferry, a 16kn full displacement superyacht or a 30kn planning motor yacht.
Our VAR packages are designed using advanced CFD simulation to look at the varying inflow conditions to rudder. We monitor the flow along leading edge and adjust the section twist to align with mean inflow conditions. We Iterate the process to account for rudder induced flow changes to arrive at minimum drag condition.
A Velocity Aligned Bracket (VAB) will similarly improve the inflow of water to the propeller, increasing propeller efficiency and reducing the cavitation on the strut.
