Composite Bearings

composite bearings by Teignbridge PropellersTeignbridge uses a number of branded composite bearing materials carefully selected to match the appropriate material and flute design to suit the application and the customer’s requirements.

Composite bearings provide a low coefficient of friction minimising the start-up torque and both friction and wear, they also deliver a longer life cycle, which reduces docking intervals and therefore maintenance costs.

The selection of composite bearing material means that the customer can choose an economical option, one that suits a variable environment or one specifically designed for a river or sandy/silty environment. Materials can be selected for durability but also to avoid cold brittle damage, heat distortion, swelling/absorption or abrasion damage. Teignbridge provides bespoke designs using brass or steel shells, shrink or interference fitting. The shells can be threaded to accommodate a screw fix flange or come with a flange as an integral unit.

Composite bearings are commonly used in high-performance vessels such as crew boats, OPV’s and interceptor vessels as well as hard-working commercial vessels. Class approvals are available with all the materials used by Teignbridge.  The hydrodynamic flute designs ensure a thin supporting water film even at low shaft speeds which result in an extended life expectancy for a Teignbridge composite bearing. A further advantage is the low noise signature that is commonly required for superyachts.

We can offer bespoke designs tailored to produce a low noise signature where this is a priority. The Teignbridge Engineering and Design Team can guide you to the appropriate material and design for your vessel.  Whilst there are numerous applications appropriate for standard bearings, first, consult an industry expert who can help guide your choice between standard or bespoke composite bearings.

We have floated [The Netanya 8 Luxury Yacht] after shaft installation and have conducted sea trials and vibration tests. Early indications suggest that there is less vibration than before, and we are very happy with that. There seem to be no other issues with the shafts and all other parameters look normal.
